DEEP TISSUE VS SPORTS MASSAGE
Many people tend to clunk the two massages together and assume that Deep Tissue and Sports Massage are the same thing. In fact, they can’t be more different, let me tell you why!
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
Deep Tissue Massage is what people seek when looking to get a massage therapist to get deeper into the muscles to help reduce stress and tension and get to the deeply held knots in the body. The techniques are slow and firm and the pressure goes into the muscle a little to a lot more deeper than you would receive when having a relaxing massage treatment. In my opinion, the pressure should also be dictated by the client as it is their body and they know how much pressure they need or not, so, with this being said, you as a therapist or your therapist should be asking about the pressure to make sure it is correct for you. Let me tell you, the feeling can be intense but not necessarily sports specific. For instance if you have a body builder and they are looking for a very firm pressure then you should be able to adapt to this, if an office worker then the pressure may well be a lot less, again, depending on the individual receiving the treatment.
SPORTS MASSAGE
The purpose of a Sports Massage as a rule of thumb, is more to support better athletic performance, aid recovery and to help prevent injuries in individuals whom are doing some form of sports. Used for pre & post events for these individuals or as part of a regular training regime. That being said, I have had many people come to me for a deep tissue massage but actually requires more of a sports technique depending on the issues they have come to me for. In other words they may have got an injury or recovering from an injury or overtrained or stressed their muscles out that a general deep tissue is not suffice so then a combination of techniques are then added as in Sports Massage Treatments such as:
Stretching, Soft Tissue Release, mobilisation of the joint in order to get into the muscle further and to the whole muscle rather than superficial.
With Sports Massage, you focus on specific muscle groups that actively need working on. This type of massage is great for gym goers or anyone with a repetitive strain or actively-related pain. Also used to enhance your athletic performance and helping to speed up recovery.
If you are not sure of the treatment you require then speak to your therapist to see which is best for you.
